Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, or HBOT, is a type of treatment used to speed up healing of stubborn wounds and infections in which tissues are starved for oxygen. It has many applications, and at the White Clinic, we use it for our Accelerated Healing Protocols following oral surgery and for patients with several systemic diseases.

It has also been approved for more than a dozen conditions ranging from burns to bone disease.

What does a Hyperbaric Chamber do?

If you undergo this therapy, you will enter a special chamber to breathe in pure oxygen in air pressure levels 1.5 to 3 times higher than average. The goal is to fill the blood with enough oxygen to repair tissues and restore normal body function.

The reason we use a hyperbaric chamber here at the White Clinic is because we perform many complex oral surgeries to remove chronic infection and inflammation from the bone marrow in the jaw. Our main focus has always been advanced wound healing protocols and we are continuously searching for ways to improve the patient experience and generate replicable and optimal outcomes. HBOT technology allows our team to ensure that our patients get, on site, the absolute best sequence of treatments, therapies and solutions to ensure rapid recovery.

How does HBOT work?

A hyperbaric treatment helps wound healing by bringing oxygen-rich plasma to tissue in need of oxygen.

Wound injuries damage the body’s blood vessels, which release fluid that leaks into the tissues and causes swelling. This swelling deprives the damaged cells of oxygen, and tissue starts to die. HBOT reduces swelling while flooding the tissues with oxygen. The elevated pressure in the chamber increases the amount of oxygen in the blood. HBOT aims to break the cycle of swelling, oxygen starvation, and tissue death.

HBOT helps block the action of harmful bacteria and strengthens the body’s immune system.

A hyperbaric treatment can disable the toxins of certain bacteria. It also increases oxygen concentration in the tissues, helping them resist infection. In addition, the therapy improves the ability of white blood cells to find and destroy invaders. This is another great benefit of the hyperbaric chamber.

That’s the severe tissue damage that happens when the blood supply returns to the tissues after they have been deprived of oxygen. When blood flow is interrupted by a crush injury, for instance, a series of events inside the damaged cells leads to the release of harmful oxygen radicals. These molecules can do damage to tissues that can’t be reversed and cause the blood vessels to clamp up and stop blood flow. HBOT encourages the body’s oxygen radical scavengers to seek out the problem molecules and allow healing to continue.

Our hyperbaric oxygen chamber

At White Clinic, we have a monoplace hyperbaric chamber, which is a chamber built for one person and that resembles a long, plastic tube. The patient slips into the chamber, which is then slowly pressurised with 100% oxygen.

What happens during a HBOT session?

People relax and lie comfortably in the chamber and take deep breaths in sessions that can last up to 2 hours. We use this immediately after surgery and regularly for the following 14 days as part of our advanced healing protocol.

Your ears may feel plugged as the pressure is raised, like when you’re in an airplane or the mountains. Simply swallowing or chewing gum will “pop” the ears back to normal hearing levels.

Your blood carries the extra oxygen throughout the body, infusing the injured tissues that require more oxygen so they can begin healing. When a session is complete, you may feel lightheaded.

Mild side effects include claustrophobia, fatigue, and headaches. Several sessions may be needed to attain the desired clinical outcomes.

Precautions

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is not for everyone. It should not be used by people who have had a recent ear surgery or ear trauma, a cold or fever, or certain types of lung disease.

Endolaser: Intravenous light therapy

In the field of Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), the CE-certified Weberneedle® Endo Laser is a unique system worldwide.

In order to apply sufficient laser/light energy to deep tissue (e.g. bloodstream, joints, spinal nerves, tumours, etc) an intravenous source is more appropriate, given that external devices can be filtered due to the barrier function of the skin.The energy that actually reaches deep tissue areas is barely measurable because the skin absorbs more than 70% of it.
